Irreverent master Dana Carvey once again captures people’s hearts. From a viral Elon Musk impression to the “Saturday Night Live” 50th-anniversary missing milestone, Carvey is once again gaining fans’ attention. The former SNL star at the age of 68 proves he is still sharp, still funny and still a part of today’s comedy scene.
A No-Show at SNL’s 50th
Earlier this year Dana Carvey had been scheduled to attend, and it was thought to be the most anticipated event of all times, – SNL 50th Anniversary Special. He and his long-time companion Mike Myers were supposed to modernize their world-wide known characters Wayne and Garth. Fans found the opportunity of Garth and Wayne’s re-emergence exciting after years in obscurity.
However, just a day before the event, Carvey fell ill. What was the reason? A nasty bout of flu, which did not allow him to go to New York. Carvey explained, “I was so disappointed, I really wanted to be there”. However, a night before the Olympics, Carvey fell ill and flu symptoms kept him from attending the event, the result being that he did not see himself on the day of the competition. He said, “Later I was very disappointed. I really wanted to be there.”
A Heartfelt Loss
The musical come after Carvey’s son Dex Carvey (32) died of accidental drug overdose in November 2023. As a result, Carvey stepped back from being a public figure for a while and gave himself time to recover mentally from the bereavement. It made him feel pain the way he never did.
He returned later and spoke with gratitude about how people have helped him. “We’re healing, it was a rough time, but we are getting stronger. Every day and moment we miss Dex,” Carvey said in his podcast.
Comedy Career Still Strong
Although despite the loss of his son and a health-related problem, Dana Carvey continued to be active in comedy. On March 21, 2025, he came out on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher”. In the episode, Carvey unleashed his signature impressions, including a sketch of Donald Trump and a piece of the routine with an impression of Elon Musk that was being sharpened.
“I still don’t know who the real Elon is,” Carvey said to everyone, and the whole audience burst into laughter. The impersonation, however, was right on the money, reminding everyone why Carvey is still one of the best impressionists of his generation.
Podcasting with David Spade
Carvey also co-hosts the popular “Superfly” video podcast with his friend, the well-known comedian David Spade. The two comment on current events, celebrity incidents, and also relive their SNL days every now and then.
In one of the latest episodes, they even received a call from Joe Exotic, known as the “Tiger King,” who called from prison. This weird moment had fans discussing for a whole week.
Classic Characters Return
In the late 2024, Carvey made a miraculous appearance on SNL, the stage on which his most famous character Church Lady was brought back to life. The skit was a close look at political figures such as Hunter Biden and Matt Gaetz, proving that Carvey’s humor is still as sharp as ever.
The cast member, Sarah Sherman, who appeared in the sketch, later on, admitted that she was afraid to act in front of him. “I thought I messed it up,” she said, but fans loved the segment.
