At first, I was skeptical when I first tried drinking lemon water in the morning. Surprisingly, within a few days, I began to feel the change in my stomach in a positive way. That heavy, bloated feeling I usually felt after eating a meal, I barely noticed it. I was more inclined to think that my body was clean, my digestion was lighter and I was generally more regular.
This is why. You see, when you drink hot lemon water before you eat, it gently triggers your digestive system. The lemon acid tells your liver to release bile, which will then digest the food. Once the water becomes warm, the stomach muscles take it easy, which results in a comfortable digestion. It’s like awakening your kind gut up.
Some people are always talking about detox, but for me, this seems to be much more deeper and real, as if the body is being cleaned out — without any pills, juice cleanses or fasting, just lemon and water. Consequently, it was a piece of cake to continue with. I just cut a lemon in two and put one half in the warm water, drank it slowly before my breakfast.
It is through the remaining week that my system was running quite smoothly, I was not that prone to gas anymore, and after meals, I felt less stuffed. In all, I reckon that was the first one that was really successful in that I was satisfied, and the best part of it was that it did not put a hole in my pocket but just a lemon daily.
1. My Skin Started Looking Cleaner and More Even
Despite not using a new face wash or any other new products, I experienced an improvement in my skin — especially the areas around the cheeks and the forehead. My only addition was Lemon water.
Firstly, lemons are loaded with Vitamin C, which is responsible for producing collagen in your body; collagen is the complex protein that keeps the skin young and elastic. Furthermore, lemon water is the best way to get rid of the toxins in your body. If you are not getting enough water your body can be filled with waste or if there is too much of it, the symptoms will be revealed on your skin. Nevertheless, with lemon water, the initial results were pimples reduced and skin tone got even.
This glow was not a sudden change, instead it took its time like there was a process of clearance from the inside. In the end, I was drinking more water in general due to the fact that lemon has made it a delightful task for me which in return was the most contributing — my skin was hydrated and was not feeling dry throughout the day particularly in the morning.
To be honest, I was definitely not prepared for such a simple thing to change my skin so much. But it actually happened. And you know what? It was more satisfying than trying five different creams.
2. I Felt Less Tired in the Morning — Even Without Coffee
I usually have coffee in the morning, but when I was taste-testing lemon water, I took a short break before getting my caffeine dose. To my surprise, I didn’t feel half as drained. Just after drinking the lemon water, I was alert, sober and, I felt like I could start the day.
What I later found out is that we lose water while we sleep, and the lack of water in the body is responsible for the lethargy. Lemon water is a quick fix for such a condition. Plus, the smell of citrus also helps in reawakening your senses, which is somehow similar to what a splash of water does to your face in the morning.
And there’s an additional nice thing. Lemons are a part of the vegan diet that is rich in potassium, this mineral helps you stay healthy and fit, and keeps your muscles and nerves working properly. Perhaps that was the reason why I felt more physically fit even though I hadn’t had breakfast yet. Not a bit of nervousness. I was very much under control. I just had a kind of energy that seemed like a part of nature. The intensity was quite peaceful which would calm my senses while lemons are sour. The gentleman I met last month in New York was the most adept speaker I’ve ever met.
It was so nice to have something gently take effect, rather than coffee, which usually really hits you but then wears off quickly. Here might be an easy trick if you desire a smoother energy level in the morning.
3. I Noticed Fewer Cravings and Smaller Portions
At first, my target was not to lose weight, but God knows something happened to me after I began drinking lemon water every morning. I didn’t feel like snacking, and I wasn’t taking my usual sweets in the afternoon.
Lemon water was one way to make me eat less before meals. Waking up and drinking it gave my body a rest from eating — I wasn’t in a hurry. Besides, because lemon is a great resource for stabilizing the levels of sugar, I was not in a sugar dip neither went I craved food like a maniac after that.
On top of this all, I quitted carbonated beverages and sweet tea and instead, had lemon water to keep my body hydrated throughout the day. Almost without knowing, I managed to cut off the calorie intake from the beverages by a few hundred which automatically reduced the puffiness of my belly. There was no diet involved. There was no big plan. But still, it worked.
So, if you are the type of person who usually has problems with proper food portions or you are unable to control late-night snacking, lemon water is the right thing to do to change your habits. Yes, it was one of the ways for me to solve my problem, and I didn’t even realize I was doing something different.
4. I Didn’t Get Sick Once That Week — Coincidence? Maybe Not
The last thing I noticed was something unexpected — I felt stronger overall. My nose didn’t run like it usually does during weather changes, and I didn’t get the usual sore throat I always seem to catch.
Lemon water gives your body a steady dose of Vitamin C, which helps your immune system stay ready. I wasn’t doing anything else new — no supplements, no extra sleep — just that one glass of lemon water each morning.
Plus, better digestion and more hydration help your body absorb nutrients from your food. That supports immunity too. So maybe it wasn’t luck after all. Maybe it was the lemon water doing its job quietly in the background.
Either way, I’m keeping this habit. For something so small and simple, it gave me more benefits than I expected.
