The latest pieces of information that have been verified state that there are no plans at the moment for Eternals 2 by Marvel Studios, and it has kept fans of the 2021 film hanging in the balance about the cosmic superhero team’s future. On Monday, actor Lauren Ridloff, who played Makkari in the film, quickly and certainly said in an interview that she was not “likely” to be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a new role.
Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, reiterated this statement in late July 2024 when he unambiguously confirmed, “There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2.”
What has become of Eternals 2?
Since Eternals was presented to the public in 2021, viewers have been remaining thirsty for information about the next chapter. The film presented a group of new super-beings, all with serious connection of their own to Earth’s past. The movie, although expensive and by an Academy Award-winning director, got reviews that were mixed, at best.
Since then, there has been no word from Marvel. As we now know, exclusive is still the main feature of this company after such a long time. Are we to think now that they never intended to make a sequel at all? That is the question.
Lauren Ridloff revealed in a recent interview on April 8, 2025, that her life in the MCU is over as she answered a question with, “I don’t know, my magic eight-ball is telling me, ‘Not likely.’” The words were simple, but they were high in unspoken truth as they color …
Empty Hand That Gave the Gift of Hope
Despite the probable impossibility for Eternals 2 to be created, one should not forget about the existence of the franchise. Marvel has been subtly incorporating the Eternals’ characters and allusions into their other projects, particularly on Disney+.
In the episode “What If… Agatha Went to Hollywood?” of the third season of the animated series What If…?, scenes were included that referred to the Eternals. These cameos and Marvel’s recognition of the characters as being part of the larger universe is a clear sign that they will still be seen in the future.
Still, it is not confirmed if any of the original cast possibly coming back, such as Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, or Salma Hayek.
Why Marvel Could Possibly Be Considering to Move On
Marvel might have a number of reasons for pausing the Eternals franchise. It might have had an excellent introduction film with an amazing cast and high production value, but it did not do well at the box office in comparison with the previous MCU blockbusters. A part of the audience went by the overly complicated plot, while some other people aren’t even familiar with the characters.
So far as the new Marvel productions are concerned, it is noticeable that the studio now could be focusing on other things. In the growing Marvel market, the brand may choose to promote the leading successful brands as opposed to running new risks with the Eternals storyline which is far from unknown to the public.
Are There Any Chances for the Characters to Appear in Other Films?
Even though Eternals 2 is a project that Marvel is not currently working on, there is still the possibility of seeing these very figures in different movies or series anyhow. The aforesaid company has an established example of resorting to this tactic. Normally, characters from the less popular brands are found in movies like Avengers or those with a multiverse theme.
Dane Whitman (played by Kit Harington) had a scene in Eternals where he found the Ebony Blade before the appearance of the said piece of equipment. If there are any supernatural MCU projects, then it is possible that his storyline might be considered.
In this way, Marvel is capable of maintaining the fame of the Eternals without the obligation to spend resources on a full-length sequel.
How the Fans Are Reacting These Days
The online community has shown mixed feelings towards the development. On one side, there are fans who are unhappy but at the same time, they anticipated these events. Whereas, on the other, there are some who are quite optimistic about Marvel being able to make a return to the genre once the current wave of movies is over.
Many people can be of the opinion that despite the occasions it let down the audience, “Eternals” still was by far a significant addition being that it brought fresh ideas such as cosmic enemies, Celestials, and the themes of the ancient world to Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As of now, it is clear Marval has no plans for Eternals 2. So, the studio must have already decided without the second part of the movie. Although, there is evidence that its footprint still exists within the greater MCU.
Not only through the step-ins from characters, but also via animated narratives, or with the future of the surprise comebacks, Eternals can be literally not around yet—only waiting for the time to re-emerge.
