An unusual rumour went viral over the internet on the 11th of April, 2025. The reports said that Social Security Administration (SSA) would cease to apply traditional communication methods with the public. It will then use X, the platform of Elon Musk, formerly known as Twitter, as its only channel of communication.
The news caused an immediate reaction of perplexity and worry, especially among the older members of society. A large number of them had the question in their heads: Is this really happening? Are Social Security updates actually going to be on the platform that most senior citizens do not even use from now on?
What we have found out about the situation so far, and what the Social Security Administration has said officially.
The Viral Report That Sparked the Rumor
The initial report was from a Gizmodo article that stated the source as the internal meetings of the Social Security Administration. According to the article, SSA Regional Commissioner, Linda Kerr-Davis, informed staff that the agency would stop the usual practice of sending press releases and communicating through “Dear Colleague” letters which are supposed to update the public and advocacy groups about program changes.
As a replacement, Kerr-Davis suggested that all of the updates would only be published on X.
The spread of such a report led to a situation of panic and concern among the people who were in their prime receiving Social Security for their survival. The greatest suffering was among the seniors who are the majority of the beneficiaries of SSA. Anyway, the seniors did not get the news as they are not the users of the X platform. Moreover, figures say that only 5% of users on X are equal to or higher than the age of 65.
The SSA’s Official Response
Following the popularity of the rumored news, the Social Security Administration reacted promptly and published a strong denial in the media. In a recent message on the agency’s official website, it said thatX account, the SSA told:
“This is false. Social Security will continue to communicate through any and all mediums.”
This said that the information which was given by the author and accordingly passed by the claim that the form of all communication by SSA would be (at present, the agency’s still use of its news page, press office, and newsletters not to exclude the public completely). You can find out on the SSA Newsroom what the official information is.
So, the said article is correct only if at least some specific parts of it could be called correct.
Why Did People Believe It?
The rumor gained speedy circulation to some extent due to various factors. Among those are:
- There have been cutbacks in federal government expenses, which have resulted in a reduction of employees in government offices such as the SSA
- SSA’s website has experienced several outages, which some people have attributed to the Department of Government Efficiency, also a group associated with Musk’s undertakings.
- Elon Musk is well-known for his ability to move official communication to X. For example, in 2020, Tesla had closed their press office and began using only Twitter to share updates.
These reasons are the prime factors that made the rumor sound plausible to a lot of people despite the fact that the people who are using the services of the SSA are the exact opposite of Tesla’s users.
The Bigger Concern: Accessibility
The real issue at hand is not simply whether the rumor is credible. Rather, it is a question of the availability of government services in America, particularly in relation to the elderly.
There are more than 73 million Americans who are recipients of Social Security relief. A large percentage of the beneficiaries are not users of social media. A switch to a single digital platform could render millions out of touch.
Advocacy groups and public communication professionals have been expressing a concern for people who are most in need warning that the decision to restrict the place for posting updates might result in confusion, delay and even trouble to understand and receive the benefits.
So, What’s Next?
SSA has issued a statement which implies that there is nothing true in the report but this happening which in turn raises the question of the whole issue:
- Can other government bodies follow suit by adopting X as their main platform of service?
- What steps would be taken by these organizations to guarantee that the messages are accessible to all, especially those that have no online presence?
- Is it true that the emergence of platforms such as X will reshape the way in which government programs will be able to interact with their citizens?
For the immediate future, one can be calm over the fact that Social Security is continuing with the use of many different channels of communication. They include their official website, newsletters, and releasing information through the media.
However, the viral spread of false or over-exaggerated claims like this story illustrates how technology can be a catalyst for such misinformation in no time. This is particularly true when the misinformation is associated with platforms owned by influential people like Elon Musk.
