The Social Security Administration (SSA) has said that the reports about fixed monthly payment amounts ($1,550, $1,860, or $2,590) for Social Security beneficiaries in 2025 are not true. These sums have been swirling in online articles, videos, and social media over the past few weeks, only to find out now that they are not genuine federal benefits.

For the so far of the April 2025, no official instruction aside from individual legal, eligible sources is available from the SSA as to the amount of the benefits either of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) those are to get monthly.

COLA Brings Modest Increase to Social Security in 2025

In October 2024, the SSA made it clear that Social Security would receive a 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) in 2025. The adjustment became effective on January 1, 2025, and is particularly needed for retirement, disability, and SSI payments. The Cost-Of-Living Adjustment (COLA) is aimed at enabling the disabled and the aged to maintain their standard of living by compensating them for price increases in consumer goods and services which are a necessity.

Based on the official COLA update from the SSA, here are the new maximum federal SSI benefit amounts:

  • Individual recipients: Up to $967 per month
  • Eligible couples: Up to $1,450 per month
  • Essential caregivers: Up to $484 per month

These figures are actually slightly modified from 2024 and they are the absolute minimum of the federal level. Besides that, some states might add some SSI provisions.

SSDI Payment Amounts Depend on Earnings History

As opposed to SSI, the SSDI income paid to a beneficiary is determined based on the person’s work history and highest taxable income. The statistic from Nolo.com has it that the 2025 average SSDI payment is approximately $1,580 per month. For such person claiming the maximum benefit at full retirement age and having made income at or above the taxable maximum all through their working life, the benefit is $4,018 per month.

The amounts $1,550, $1,860, or $2,590 are not a standard SSDI payment. Hence, the variations in SSDI sums are due to different working and earning conditions, not flat-rate rewards.

The Cause of the False Numbers

The source of the wrong data, though not known, is doubtlessly associated with the income thresholds used by the SSA for working people.

For the purpose of determining the levels of earnings at which an individual has engaged in substantial gainful activity, Social Security Administration (SSA) typically fixes these levels as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) limits. These amounts are not the benefit amounts but earnings limits. If the person gets a salary larger than the SGA threshold, he might be disqualified from the receipt of SSDI.

The SGA limit is set at 2025 service of the SSA.

  • $1,620/month for non-blind people
  • $2,700/month for the blind

There is a tendency on the one hand to misrepresent these levels entitled to the SGA or, on the other hand, to understand these levels as the actual benefits on some occasions.

April 2025 Payment Schedule

The April 2025 payment schedule of the SSA is structured as per the regular pattern:

  • April 1: SSI recipients
  • April 3: Recipients who began benefits before May 1997
  • April 9: Birthdays 1st–10th
  • April 16: Birthdays 11th–20th
  • April 23: Birthdays 21st–31st

This plan applies to retirement, SSDI, and survivors benefits. The official 2025 calendar of the SSA can show the exact dates for those who are interested by visiting the official 2025 calendar.

SSA Urges Public to Verify Benefit Information

SSA officials want the public to be aware of the misleading information. Their main suggestion is to confirm the information with SSA’s sources only.

“All layouts of payments and changes in benefits are visitable on ssa.gov,” the SSA speaker noted. “If you are confronted with a notice that is out of the ordinary, get the facts directly from us first before taking any further steps—also share it if necessary.”

The use of the my Social Security account portal is also recommended by the local authorities to the recipients of the scheme to verify their records of benefits payment and benefit amounts.

The assertion that SSI or SSDI beneficiaries are getting fixed monthly payments $1,550, $1,860 or $2,590 in 2025 is false. Benefit amounts are individual facts and legal facts and are structured on varying factors such as a person’s age, income, and if, is disabled for the time being.

It is suggested to the people of the United States not to be gullible and rely on SSA.gov as the only dependable source of information or on reliable financial news outlets for new updates.
